About Bad Beat
Bad beat is a poker term for a hand which appears to be a strong favorite
to win a showdown but nevertheless loses and badbeat stories are often
told about incredible losing streaks or bad beat jackpot winners.
A bad beat mostly occurs when a poker player bets his clearly stronger
hand than what his opponent is holding, with the opponent making a poor
call and eventually hits as more cards are dealt and finally wins the
hand.
Bad beats often involves players who are rewarded for mathematically bad
play, calling a bet neither having the best hand nor the right pot odds to
make the call, then ending up winning the hand anyway.
It can also involve an inferior hand catching running cards when it
requires two cards in a row to come from behind to win the pot as for
example in Texas Holdem, catching cards on both the turn and the river to
complete a straight or a flush.
One other characteristic bad beat is when losing with full house to a
straight flush as sometimes seen in movies such as the James Bond movie
Casino Royale, were Bond wins the showdown with a higher straight flush
than the villain.
Amongst poker players there are often disagreements whether a particular
hand is a bad beat or not since some consider losing against a player
hitting a higher pair on river, others getting drawn out with help of both
turn and river for a higher straight, flush or full house, to be
considered as a bad beat.
With the extreme flow of newbie players into the poker world who do not
have the insight to recognize normal play or exceptions, the opinion of a
bad beat truly differs. For example if a newbie player loses with AA the
first four times he will surely get wrong view of the value of AA's than
if he won 20 times and then lost four times in a row with that hand. Once
a player has played tens of thousands of poker hands it is much easier to
distinguish a bad bet from that sometimes, shit actually happens.
If you are a new poker player it is more complex than that since bad beats
do exist and they tend to happen more often to new inexperienced players
because they make mistakes that invite bad beats.
Sometimes when playing Texas Holdem you will get KK three hands in a row
and sometimes you go 40 hands without even getting an ace. You can
struggle all day to win a few hands and when you are about to leave the
game you all of the sudden looks down at AA, ending up losing the showdown
to a better hand. Sometime you can also be lucky and hit AA's several time
in a shorter session or hitting a lower set with 44’s, ending up with
quads.
We strongly believe that luck is fairly distributed to all poker players,
and it is up to you how you use that luck to win pots. With this said,
better players normally uses their 'luck' better than inexperienced
players.
Here at badbeat.org you can read about their stories and bad beat jackpots.
To give players an extra incentive to play, extreme bad beats are
sometimes rewarded as a jackpot. If you never have played in poker room
which offers jackpots for bad beats the rules are quite simple as you
need both hole cards in Texas Hold em if your hand is busted by another hand
holding a higher quads or straight flush, to qualify and win a hefty
bonus. In most card clubs the loser of the bad beat hand receives 50% of
the jackpot, the winner gets 25% and the other players seated at that same
table evenly split the remaining 25%.
Moreover all progressive bad beat jackpots are progressive and increases
daily until they are hit and paid out. On Carbon Poker player RUGGIO hit
the world's largest online Texas Hold'Em Bad Beat Jackpot Online, at over
$1,200,000 a new record was set.
